BIG MATCH PREVIEW: BRISTOL ROVERS (H)

5 August 2016

The Iron kick-off their League One campaign when they take on newly-promoted Bristol Rovers at Glanford Park.

United go into the clash with Darrell Clarke’s side on the back of two successive victories, over Rotherham and Hartlepool respectively.

However, the hosts will have to be on their guard against Rovers, who are fresh from consecutive promotions.

United manager Graham Alexander confirmed Paddy Madden will miss the game on Saturday, as the club's medical staff continue to nurse him to full fitness following a calf knock.

Midfielder Sam Mantom has returned to training now and will be assessed on Friday before a decision is made about whether he'll be involved in the matchday squad.

Quotes from the boss regarding the team news can be seen here.

There was frustration for the Iron when these two sides last met, as the spoils were shared in a 1-1 draw at Glanford Park.

Sam Winnall had given the home side the lead mid-way through the first half, and had looked to have secured all three points. That was until Steven Gillespie’s header, late on, snatched a point for the Pirates.

The 2015-16 season was a real breakthrough one for striker Matty Taylor, who fired Rovers to promotion with 28 goals.

Having joined the club from Forest Green Rovers in 2014, the 26-year-old hit the ground running immediately, and played a big part in the first of their two promotions, finding the net 21 times in the process.

Taylor attracted interest from League One and Championship sides, but delighted Rovers fans when he opted to sign a new deal, as they head into the new campaign.

He’s sure to be one to watch, as he looks to keep up his impressive scoring rate.
