Ahead of the weekend's opening fixture with Bristol Rovers, United manager Graham Alexander has stated striker Paddy Madden will miss the game through injury.
The Irishman featured in every game for the Iron last season en route to being the club's leading goalscorer with 23 strikes to his name in all competitions, but will sit out the first game of 2016-17 after suffering a calf injury a couple of weeks ago."It's too early for Paddy, so he's not going to be involved," he told The Iron PlayerHD.
"The physios have been really pleased with him, but it is very difficult for him as he's desperate to be out there, even on the training ground never mind the matchday.
"He's just going to have to be patient with it. We won't risk him or rush him because it is a long season and we don't want to push it too early.
"When he's ready, he will be back in contention with the team."
One of the Iron's three summer signings Sam Mantom is yet to feature in claret and blue having missed out with a knee injury during pre-season.
But, following a return to grass last week, Mantom has resumed full training with the rest of the squad and will be assessed ahead of the weekend's encounter.
"With Sam it is a little bit different, he's trained this week," declared the Scunthorpe boss.
"We will have to wait and see how he is after Friday's training session but, apart from that, we've got a relatively fully fit squad.
"I will have a couple of selection issues for myself to decide on with my staff but we will put out a side we feel are capable of going and winning the three points. It's superb for me and I'd rather it be this way than not having any decisions to make.
"It's important for any manager that they have as close to a fully-fit squad as possible, but with genuine competition in the ranks and I do believe that we've got that here.
"I will be disappointing a few players who might be expecting to play but we've got a competitive squad and everyone will play their part this season. Ten months is a long time in football and the team can change over the ten months, and the players have to keep themselves ready when they're not in the team.
"We're looking forward to picking a team for Saturday, but without doubt we will need everyone this season."
