IRON SIGN STEPHEN DAWSON

20 May 2015

United have made midfielder Stephen Dawson their first signing of the summer.

The 29-year-old signs on a free transfer and pens a two-year deal which will start on July 1, with the option of a further year in the club's favour.

That comes following the end of his one-year stay at League One rivals Rochdale, where he made 36 appearances in all competitions last season.

Dawson is a former Republic of Ireland U21 international, and started his career as a youth at Leicester City.

He went on to ply his trade at Mansfield Town, where he stayed between 2005 and 2008, scoring four goals in 128 appearances.

Bury was his next port of call, where he played for two years and notched six goals in 95 appearances.

2010 saw Dawson make the move to Leyton Orient, where he spent one-and-a-half-seasons, scoring four times in 75 appearances before he moved to Barnsley for an undisclosed fee in January 2012.

He stayed at Oakwell for two-and-a-half-years, hitting six goals in 85 appearances for the then-Championship side.

He turned down a new deal there last summer and joined Keith Hill's Rochdale, where he played a pivotal part in their play-off push.
