About

Scunthorpe United completed the signing of centre-back Will Evans on a one-year contract for the 2023-24 season following his departure from Boreham Wood.

The 33-year-old central defender joined after a two-year stint there, where he made 79 appearances and scored three goals. He also got to the National League play-offs this season, before being knocked out by eventual winners Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Will, who has made almost 400 senior career appearances and scored 27 career goals, played for Fairford Town and then Cricklade before joining Swindon Town and progressing through their Centre of Excellence.

While there he joined Hereford United on loan and soon made that move permanent before also having a loan stint at Newport County.

A three-year stint at Eastleigh followed, where around 100 appearances were made and four goals were scored.

Following that, he enjoyed two years at Aldershot Town, where almost a century of appearances were almost clocked up, and then a three-year stay at Chesterfield where that consistency in terms of appearances continued prior to joining Boreham Wood in 2021.

The big, strong centre-half has experienced five National League play-off campaigns and, after signing for the Iron, Evans said: "It's obviously a big club that has been under some difficult times recently. Hopefully, with the signings coming in, we can bounce back up the leagues.

"Straight away there are good intentions being put out to the rest of the league where Scunthorpe are at. It's pleasing for me personally, because you want to be playing at the the top end of any league, so hopefully we can be right up there."

After a consistent first season with the Iron, Evans would earn himself a well deserved contract extension that saw him extend his stay at the Attis Arena until the end of the 2025-26 season. During the first year of his new deal Evans would play a crucial part in Scunthorpe's promotion to the National League via the National League North play-offs, making 42 appearances in a United defensive unit that smashed both the club and divisional clean sheet records.
