Scunthorpe United is devastated to learn of the prospect of a consultation with steelworkers working in the local area, with 2,700 jobs confirmed as being at risk as early as June 2025.
Steel remains an important part of the town's history and heritage, and along with the football club, both have very recently been in jeopardy over a sustained period of time.
The Scunthorpe steelworks have long been the backbone of our community, shaping not only the economic landscape of the town but also its very identity. For generations, this vital industry has provided employment, supported families, and contributed to the nation's infrastructure, producing steel that has helped build the foundations of our modern world.
As the challenges of a changing global economy continue to evolve, it is crucial that we stand in solidarity with the workers, families, and businesses who rely on the steelworks for their livelihoods. The legacy of the steel industry in Scunthorpe is not just about raw materials - it's about the people who have dedicated their lives to this vital trade, the pride of craftsmanship, and the spirit of community that has been built over decades of hard work.
While we understand this news will be uneasy for many families in the town and beyond, we remain United with them through this process, and understand that football is often a release for many people, not just steelworkers, as they divert their attentions of real life for a couple of hours to watch their team on a Saturday afternoon.
As such, we are putting on a ticketing offer applicable to all steelworkers this Saturday, with adults able to attain a ticket for just £10. All you need to do to take advantage of this offer is show some identification that you are an employee of British Steel.
The town of Scunthorpe has faced many challenges in its history, and it is through unity and shared commitment that we will navigate the future. The steelworks are integral to our heritage and our future. Let us continue to stand together, working to secure a prosperous and sustainable future for Scunthorpe and its steel industry.
