Scunthorpe United can confirm captain and midfielder Michael Clunan will leave the club upon the expiration of his contract in order to rejoin his former side King’s Lynn Town.

The 31-year-old originally penned a one-year contract after departing the Linnets in 2023, where he was their long-term captain and had spent the last eight seasons, skippering them to promotion from the Southern League and National League South in his time there. Clunan then extended that stay to include last season, where he added a further promotion to his CV, guiding the Iron to promotion from National League North.

He originally joined the Linnets after spells at Boston, Histon and Lowestoft, following his departure from Carrow Road and in his last season for the club, made 47 appearances in the National League North, scoring four times, and was also named in the divisional team of the season.

Across two campaigns with the club, Clunan led the dressing room with pride, humility and assurance, and was a real leader behind the scenes, as well as on the pitch. His drive and determination was infectious around the place

Including the two promotion games, Clunan made a total of 46 league starts for the Iron last season, which sees him leave the club with a total of 86 appearances, 82 of which starts. He scored one solitary goal for the club, during the 2-0 win over Warrington Town in March 2024.

Following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, Scunthorpe United did enter negotiations with Michael and offer him a new deal for the forthcoming season, but the offer made by King’s Lynn, and also taking into consideration his young family, and the locality of the offer, returning to his former side was too good of one to turn down.

Everyone at Scunthorpe United would like to thank Michael for his efforts while with the club, and wish him all the very best for the future.
