Assistant manager Chris Plummer looks ahead to a tough encounter

24 October 2023

Assistant manager Chris Plummer previews tonight’s clash with Spennymoor, in what will be a top of the table clash under the lights of Glanford Park.

Having started the season well, Spennymoor sit third in the Vanarama National League North table and have taken 23 points from their opening 12 fixtures. Plummer gave an insight into what’s to be expected from a slick Moors outfit: “They’re right up there in the league and they’ve had some good results so far this season, which is shown by the league table, so we’re under no illusion that it’s going to be a tough game."

The Moors game at the weekend against Boston United was postponed as a result of the extreme weather conditions that swept across the country. When asked if the postponement would help or hinder tonight’s opposition Plummer explained: “It can go either way to be honest. A team could be better for it or be worse for it like we were on Saturday, but all we can do is prepare for the game ourselves and be ready for the fixture.”

The Iron’s disappointing 2-0 defeat against Chester on Saturday has been heavily reflected on in preparation for tonight’s encounter. When questioned if he had any final reflections on the game he replied: “My feelings are the same as they originally were.

"I don’t think we played particularly well during the second half, collectively we have to take responsibility for that performance but that’s now gone so we will learn from it and look ahead to the next game.”

United have been thoroughly impressive at home so far this campaign and have only lost once. This home form has been followed up by numerous special nights under the lights so Plummer expressed his views by adding: “We want to create another one of those nights tomorrow, but we can’t just expect to turn up and it’s just going to happen so the lads have got to make sure it does happen every time they cross the white line.

In form striker Danny Elliott was forced to leave the field of play merely minutes into Saturday’s fixture. Plummer was able to provide an update on how he’s progressing along with the long list of Iron players that have been confined to the side-lines of late: “Good news in regards of Danny. He had an x-ray which has been deemed to be clear, but I think it might be too early for Danny tomorrow, so we have to try and prepare without him.

"We’ve also had Maxi (Kouogun) train with us today along with Michael Clunan and there a couple of other that are back on grass and getting closer to joining back in with the squad, so from the very long injury list that we had we’re slowly starting to narrow it down.”
