Remembering past matches played by the Iron on May 14...

Former Iron players born on this day: Tony Ford (1959), Izzy Iriekpen (1982).

The Iron achieved automatic promotion to Division Three on the final day of the season in 1982/83 as they recorded a slender 2-1 victory over Chester City.

A run of just one defeat in six following a 5-1 hammering to Colchester United, Scunthorpe had kept themselves in the mix for promotion with Wimbledon, Hull City and Port Vale already having secured their jump to the next tier. With Bury in pole position for fourth spot, Scunthorpe, Colchester and York all had an outside chance of clinching the final spot.

Tommy Graham got both goals, first putting the visitors ahead after fifteen minutes before their were pegged back just eight minutes later. News came in that the Shakers were losing 3-1 to Champions Wimbledon, but the Iron still needed to win the match to go ahead. That goal did eventually arrive in the 82nd minute with Graham notching his second.

Steve Cammack would be awarded the golden boot for the campaign following his 25 league goals.
