Cameron Wilson ready and raring to go ahead of the new season

20 July 2023

After four goals in pre-season to date, attacking midfielder Cameron Wilson is hoping to continue the positive impression he's making ahead of the new campaign.

The 20-year-old had initially left the club in the summer, but returned for the first day of pre-season and swiftly signed a new deal with United. Since returning he's found form and confidence and cannot wait to see what the new campaign brings.

"It was nice to come back," he stated.

"The gaffer told me his plans and I liked them. I just want to kick on this season, get as many goals as I can this season and help the team get back up.

"All of the signings that have come in are very good. In training and in the games, we've all gelled pretty well, which has shown over the last two games at Ilkeston and Gainsborough.

"Pre-season has been tough. The first two weeks were very tough with a lot of running and long training sessions, with the gaffer getting his plans into us, but I think that has shown now."

After two tough games to start pre-season in which United registered a draw and a victory, the Iron have followed that up with two wins from sides one division below, scoring nine goals without reply.

"We started well in both games at Brigg and Winterton, but we didn't take those chances, but in the last two games we have taken those chances and kept clean sheets in both of those," he continued.

"It's definitely clicked, it felt like that in the last game. Four goals for myself. I'll take the deflected one at Gainsborough! I'm happy with it. I hope I can keep scoring and keep providing goals for other players as well."

With three games coming up at Glanford Park against EFL opposition, Wilson is aiming to use those encounters as testers to see how far the squad have come in pre-season.

"It'll be good against higher opposition to ourselves and to the games we have been playing," he added.

"It'll show where we are. A few players that we've signed should be at a higher level, but we're here to get Scunthorpe back up the leagues."

With just two weeks to go until the start of the competitive campaign, the Iron attacker has one eye on that opening day squad, and hopes he will be one of Jimmy Dean's XI selected at Tamworth.

"Everyone's looking forward to getting the season going now, but obviously there are games coming up this week," he stated.

"We want to try and win those games and that will get us a good start, and then hopefully we can get a win against Tamworth.

"Hopefully I'm in the gaffer's plans for the first game of the season, because everyone wants to be playing in the first game. We've got to just keep working hard, like I am, and see who the gaffer picks."
