Report: Iron U18s 5-0 Huddersfield Town U18s

7 January 2023

The Iron’s Under-18s were 5-0 winners against Huddersfield Town on Saturday morning, as goals from Charley Strouther, Harry Elliott-Bell, Charlie Burden-Whittleton, Harvey Cribb and Ben Pike ensured victory.

Having started the game in strong fashion, Strouther’s charging run down the left flank caused the Terriers’ backline early problems, as his cross found Shay Larkin, who tapped home to give United the lead.

Shortly after, the lead was doubled, as Ethan Young’s superb diagonal ball found the feet of Elliott-Bell in an advanced position, with the defender notching our second of the game.

Keeping the ball well and holding off any Huddersfield advances remained a priority as the first half etched on, goalkeeper Ewan Oxborough made some important saves to keep our lead intact.

As the second half began, Burden-Whittleton’s outside of the foot finish handed the Iron a third goal. Strouther again did well in the build-up, as his cross had created the opening well.

Burden-Whittleton’s impressive corner delivery found the head of Cribb, who glanced his effort into the back of the net to notch United’s fourth, much to the joy of the Iron bench.

Tyrell Sellars-Fleming then took his turn regarding set-pieces, delivering a fine free-kick into the area, which Town goalkeeper Francis Hurl did well to initially save, before Pike rounded off the scoring at Appleby Frodingham.

Academy Manager Tony Daws was impressed with what he described as a complete performance, stating: ‘’The boys did exactly what we asked of them today and I couldn’t be more pleased. From the minute go they were on the money and the result shows that.

‘’Huddersfield are a good side and they passed the ball around well in good areas, but I thought in the second half we contained them well and restricted their chances on goal.’’

Scunthorpe return to action next Saturday with an away trip to Burton Albion in the EFL Youth Alliance League.

IRON: Oxborough; Abraham (Cunningham, 80), Pike, Young; Burden-Whittleton (Farrar, 80), Robertson, Elliot-Bell, Cribb, Strouther; Sellars-Fleming, Larkin (Corbett, 60).
