Nelson talks after Woking game

14 January 2023

Interim first team manager Michael Nelson provided his reaction after the Iron's 2-0 home loss to Woking.

Rhys Browne gave the visitors the lead and United battled on in a game of few chances before Padraig Amond sealed the away team's win near the end.

Nelson told Iron Player: "It was a tough one, there weren't a lot of chances in the game from either side, and I just thought Woking did a job on us, and beat us in a way that they will defeat many more sides after us, and many before us.

"It was disappointing but we dust ourselves off and go again.

"I just thought we got caught up in their game. We spoke to the lads about what they are and we showed them a statistic where they are top in our division for aerial duels won and loose ball duels won, as well as regains in opposition half and passes per defensive action, so we knew what they were going to be like.

"They scored two goals from winning a loose ball and did exactly what we thought they would do.

"I'm not disappointed with the lads that they've beaten us that way but more that we went away from the identity which we've built up over the last four or five games in terms of trying to get it down and pass it at times. We got caught up in just trying to return the ball, and once we did that Woking were always going to come out on top."

Talking about injuries, Nelson added: "Ewan (Oxborough, goalkeeper) took one on his thumb in the shooting warm-up and looks like he might have broken his thumb, so he went to hospital before the game.

"Fin (Shrimpton) went for an x-ray at half-time after a knock on his shin. Fingers crossed he's alright and it's just a bit of bone bruising."
