Nelson talks following draw with Bromley

28 January 2023

Scunthorpe United interim boss Michael Nelson insisted there was an element of ‘disappointment’ in the dressing room following our 1-1 draw with Bromley at Glanford Park.

Michael Cheek gave the visitors the lead on the hour mark before Elliott Whitehouse’s first goal for the club rescued a point in an entertaining encounter throughout.

Dominating for large parts of the game, United have now picked up seven points from a possible twelve in our last four outings, with Nelson keen to praise the output his players showed across the 90 minutes.

"I enjoyed it," he told Iron Player. "I thought we were really good and I had a bit of a worry and decision to make whether I go with the same 11. Don't get me wrong they deserved to go with the same 11, I just had concern on energy levels after playing on that pitch on Wednesday.

"The energy and the commitment, the amount of time we won the ball back in Bromley’s half was staggering. Really pleased, an element of disappointment in the dressing room, as we felt when we did score we took the game to them.

"I think even on the balance of play before we scored we were right in it and we had some great chances. A little bit of disappointment but I said to the lads look they are a good outfit and lets take our point and move on."

Dominating most of the play in the final 20 minutes, the Iron went in search of a winner late on but couldn't create a vital opening to nab all three points.

Nelson praised the attacking impetus his players showed and provided key insight into his thinking behind the late tactical change.

"We were trying to get shots off as we felt we didn’t do that early on," he added. "In the first half, Cam [Wilson] got in the box and did a lot of chopping and every time we did that we gave them an extra chance to get in and block it.

"We got a shot off, it fell to Elliott [Whitehouse] and he has the calmness to slide it in the bottom corner. I am really pleased as my first look was to the linesmen but I’m happy for him.

"We put Ty [Sellars-Fleming] on to help us go two up top to save Cam and we also changed to a diamond. As soon as they scored I said to Muzzy [Paul Musselwhite] that we need to get three up at some point and try and pin them.

"So that was the plan and we left it until the last 15 minutes and we put Cam high on the left, Ferns [Liam Feeney] high on the right and Ty down the middle to help us play with three up top.

"I think it worked and it’s always nice when you do make a change that it comes off, so it was good that it worked. It isn’t just us it’s the lads and they have to go on and make it work, so credit to the players today."

Also creditting the Iron fans' support across the 90 minutes this afternoon, the 42-year-old told how he instructed his players to give our supporters something to shout about before departing this afternoon.

"I’ve just said to them, look this is going to be the best atmosphere since I have been at the club and probably all season," Nelson said.

"So enjoy it but also on the other hand give them something to cheer about, I feel like we did that today. The reaction by going 1-0 down from the crowd was fantastic today and once we got our tails up and got back into the game, the fans were right behind us and it just was a shame we couldn’t get that vital goal to send them home even happier.

"It's what we want to have when we bring extra fans in and have extra people turn up. We want to have a good performance in order to keep them and I think the boys did that today.

"I think they put a right good performance on, hopefully the fans enjoyed it and hopefully they keep coming back and bring a couple of friends with them to have a bigger crowd next time."

With our next National League outing coming in just 6 days time - against Barnet at Glanford Park - United’s attention must now quickly turn to the visit of the Bees.

Hoping to build once more on our recent upturn, Nelson issued his praise for how things are progressing as of late.

"It's brilliant," he added. "We just said there you have lost one in four now with two clean sheets. If you do that all season you are up there competing for the third and fourth spots.

"We’ve got to carry that momentum on now and try to build on it. It’s probably one where the teams will see that and probably try and come and beat us because we are playing well."
