In memoriam: Jim Lavery

5 January 2023

Scunthorpe United is saddened to learn of the passing of former goalkeeper Jim Lavery at the age of 74.

Born in Lennoxtown in Scotland in December 1948, Lavery first joined the club in August 1966 but wouldn't make his debut until the final game of 1967 in the 3-2 away win at Oxford United. The side would also take a point in the reverse fixture, with four points taken from the then-league leaders.

He would make a total of 16 consecutive appearances during this spell in all competitions.

After departing for local side Brigg Town, Lavery would again return to Scunthorpe United in August 1974 and waited much less time for his second debut at the club, this time deputising for Geoff Barnard some four league games into the season in a 2-2 away draw at Barnsley.

He would play 12 times for the club in the 1974-75 season, including in the League Cup defeat at Manchester City.

Lavery would return to Brigg Town following the conclusion of the season, in total playing 26 league games for the club and two further matches in cup competitions.

Our thoughts are with Jim's family and friends at this sad time.
