Foster delighted with birthday victory and clean sheet

9 January 2023

Goalkeeper Owen Foster was extremely impressed with the Iron’s performance against Maidenhead on Saturday and getting his second clean sheet of the season on his birthday.

“I think the boys worked really hard to get the win”, he told Iron Player. “(Caolan) Lavery with three excellent goals and then we worked hard to get the clean sheet as well.

“I think there was one save I had to make in the first half, and then a couple of crosses I had to come and claim, and then a few bits with my feet but that’s what you want as a football team. You don’t want the keeper to be doing an awful lot and that’s how you win games."

When asked about the shoulder injury which he got in the home game on Boxing Day against Chesterfield and his recent run in the side, Foster revealed: “I’d made the save and I felt something go in my shoulder as I've got back up to go get the ball, and then their player kneed the same shoulder, so it pushed it back and it was just painful.

“I couldn’t raise my arm for about three days so there was no chance of me carrying on.

“It was very disappointing obviously, especially because we lost as well. I feel like I could've made a positive impact but it’s always disappointing coming off.

“It was a good feeling to be starting, I didn’t know I was going to be playing on Saturday and then I got here, and I’ve seen I was, and I was buzzing.

“Obviously the clean sheet last time was nice but this time it’s even better because we got the win as well. Everyone is buzzing in the dressing room: music on, dancing, everything."

Foster had quite a bit to say about the recent efforts and work rates put in by the players and the team.

“The boys have worked really hard. We’ve been playing well for weeks; we just haven't been getting the results that we want but today we did. We managed to get it over the line," he said.

“It felt like everyone gelled together again as they have been doing in previous weeks, but everything just came together nicely, and we got the three goals and the 3-0 win.

“I think especially the young boys and the older lads have stepped up to the mark recently, and have been playing really well, and it’s just a great feeling to get the win."

Finally, Foster briefly spoke about the next game for the Iron and the preparations required.

He said: “We have to back it up again next week against Woking. We’re going to come in next week and that’s all we’re going to focus on from there."
