Focus switches to Solihull for Taft

Defender George Taft reflected on Saturday’s home defeat against high-flying Woking.

Speaking to Iron Player following the game, the 29-year-old talked about the way the 2-0 loss panned out: “We’ve spoken about it after the game. I think we went away from the positive play and style that we’ve been building over the last couple of weeks.

“Since Nels (Michael Nelson) has come in, he’s done a great job. I think we played to how they wanted the game to go today and made it a fight game.”

After the positivity of an emphatic win against Maidenhead United just seven days prior, the side were fired up and ready for action at the weekend, only to be dealt a sucker punch of an early goal against inside five minutes.

Speaking about conceding so early, he continued: “We were too spread, didn’t deal with the second ball and it was an easy pass through. They’ve got on the end of it and slotted it home and I think it was a hard one to take.

“The second goal is a bit of a different goal. It’s landed perfectly and he’s taken it first time. I just think we needed to hold out longer for the first goal and create more ourselves.

“They pressed high and hard, and get up the pitch well. They’re a very direct team and play off seconds. It’s one of those games where we needed to take the sting out of it, get the ball down and make the passes to make them drop off.

“You can tell they’re up there. They work so hard, constantly for 90 minutes.”

The Iron now have two successive games on the road and first visit another top of the table team in Solihull Moors on Saturday. Taft is eager to have another positive week on the training pitch as United look for three points on the road.

He said: “We have to come in Monday, work hard and have a really good week, focus on how we’re going to deal with them and get that away win. They’re another good team. It’s a team that have been together for a while, so they have that togetherness and bond, so we’ve got to go there and really put a shift in.”
