1 September 2022

Remembering past matches played by the Iron on September 1...

Former Iron players born on this day: Mark Sertori (1967), Jason Maxwell (1972), Rekeil Pyke (1997).

The Iron have only twice failed to score on this day in 15 attempts on the opening day of September.

One of Scunthorpe's victories on this day came in 2007 when the Blades were the visitors, with the Iron looking to stamp their authority as the newly promoted side in the Championship.

With 8,801 in attendance for the pulsating affair, Scunthorpe went ahead just before half time with Andy Crosby at the near post to power in a volley past Paddy Kenny from close range.

That lead became two in the second half when Martin Paterson was played through by Jonathan Forte to tuck an effort into the net for his fourth game in successive games. That settled the former Stoke City striker after having a previous effort controversially ruled out for offside.

The Blades weren't blunted quite yet though when Danny Webber netted twice in four minutes to restore parity.

The game hit boiling point with a minute to go when Cliff Byrne and Derek Geary both walked for coming together following a challenge.

There was still time on the clock for Matt Sparrow to get the winner as he forced the ball into the net following Forte's knockdown.

Overall playing record for September 1: Played 15, Won 7, Drawn 4, Lost 4, Scored 31, Conceded 20.
