Report: Barnet 1-1 Iron

28 October 2022

Rob Apter scored late on for the Iron but Harry Pritchard levelled not long after, as our game at Barnet ended in a 1-1 draw.

United went into the game making one change from the side that beat Gateshead on Tuesday night, as Jai Rowe came in for Nathaniel Wallace.

The hosts got the first corner of the game as Andrew Boyce turned behind a low cross from the right.

From it, Harry Pritchard connected to the corner from Rob Hall, but sent his header over the bar.

With six minutes gone, Rob Apter stayed down following a challenge on half way, but Joe Nuttall took the ball and spread the ball wide to Jai Rowe before Reagan Ogle sent in a deep cross searching for Alfie Beestin, which evaded the midfielder.

On 13 minutes, there was good defending from Kgosi Ntlhe as he stopped Kabamba from continuing inside the box when running onto a cross, with Mason O’Malley hooking the ball away from danger.

Barnet then won a corner three minutes later, with the first cross dealt with at the near post before a later in-swinging cross was fired in, with the resultant header from Daniele Collinge flying wide of Marcus Dewhurst’s right-hand post.

There was then a superb stop from Dewhurst as he got down low to his left to palm away a prodded effort from Nicke Kabamba.

With 22 minutes gone, Nuttall won the ball back and quickly mounted an Iron attack which culminated in Apter looking to beat the final defender, but he was only able to roll a shot towards goal and wide.

With 28 minutes played, Caolan Lavery rolled Jerome Okimo from a Ntlhe clearance and looked to break. He involved Rowe, Nuttall and Beestin, but the latter saw his cross headed clear.

Soon after, Ntlhe won a header in defence, with Nuttall nodding on for Apter. He was able to stride forward before finding Lavery on the right. He cut onto his left foot before firing a 25-yard shot over the bar.

Then, Ntlhe got tight to Kabamba to block a shot from inside the box before Rowe read a ball in towards the back post to head behind for a corner.

In the 32nd minute, Andrew Boyce headed away the subsequent corner, but the ball ricocheted off Collinge towards goal, with Dewhurst gathering the loose ball.

Shortly following that, Ben Wynter had a go from range on the half-volley, sending his low shot across goal and wide.

Then there was patient build-up from the hosts, who looked to find space for a shot. Hall cut onto his left foot and looked to angle goalwards, but sent his effort over the bar.

Just before the break, O’Malley sent the ball forward down the left with Lavery getting inside the box and managing to cut the ball back, but the hosts cleared.

There was a Scunthorpe change at the break as Ntlhe was replaced by Tom Pugh.

Four minutes into the second period, Rowe won a header down the right, Lavery cushioned the ball down and Apter came out into space to turn towards goal and send an effort narrowly over the bar from 25 yards.

A minute later, Lavery broke the offside trap from a ball over the top from Reagan Ogle. He rolled the ball across goal for Nuttall, but goalkeeper Walker slid out and gathered at his feet.

With 55 minutes on the clock, Dewhurst challenged on the edge of his box and won the header, with the ball not coming inside the penalty area. Beestin then was caught late and initially stayed down, but it was just a free-kick to the Iron.

A minute later, there was a terrific save from home goalkeeper Laurie Walker as the ball was cut back into the box for Nuttall who lashed a left foot at the ball. Walker got the slightest of touches onto the post, with the ball coming back into play.

On the hour mark, great determined work from Apter saw him drive down the right wing and send a cross in for Lavery, who sent a header wide.

With 63 minutes gone, there was a great reaction save from Dewhurst as the hosts got space down the right, with the effort on goal beaten away by the Iron shot stopper and gathered at the second attempt.

A minute later, Nuttall broke the offside trap from a ball over the top from Beestin, but Walker read it and was out to clear as the ball skipped away from the Iron frontman.

On 67 minutes, a mis-hit shot from the hosts rolled fortuitously to Kabamba. He turned inside the box but saw his effort blocked by Ogle for a corner.

Then, Sean Shields lashed a volley goalwards from the edge of the box as the Iron cleared the corner. It took a deflection for another corner.

With around 20 minutes left, space opened up for Butterfield to drive towards goal after picking up possession on halfway. He had a go from 35-yards with his left-footed strike going wide of Walker’s right-hand post.

With 78 minutes gone, Pugh got in a strong block as the hosts pressed down the left. Boyce and Ogle then got in blocks too from Pritchard and Shields' shots, as the hosts won a corner on the left. The ball was eventually gathered by Dewhurst.

Two minutes later, Beestin chested the ball down on halfway to win possession, rode the challenge and slid the ball through to Apter, who coolly slotted home the opener and his fourth goal for the club.

In the 82nd minute, the home side's De Haaviland cut inside from the left and sent a cross-shot in that evaded everyone and went out for a goal kick.

And then the hosts levelled as Pritchard lashed home a strike from the edge of the area.

On 87 minutes, Ogle cleared away as the ball broke loose in the Iron area after an attack from the left. Then, Dewhurst was forced into action, tipping a long range effort over the crossbar.

Boyce and Nuttall send headers off target from free-kicks in the closing stages and, in stoppage time, Barnet won a corner from the left, which Collinge headed over the crossbar.

There were also two late Scunthorpe alterations as Apter and Lavery were replaced by Cameron Wilson and Harrison Poulter.

Scunthorpe return to action on Tuesday night when they visit Eastleigh.
