Report: AFC Telford United U18s 0-6 Iron U18s

11 October 2022

The Iron Under-18s were 6-0 winners against AFC Telford United Under-18s in the FA Youth Cup third qualifying round on Tuesday night, with Harrison Poulter scoring four times and Tyrell Sellars-Fleming netting twice.

A sign of what was to come in the game, United pressed in the early stages, with Sellars-Fleming getting in an early cross from the right but it was cleared away by the hosts.

Nathaniel Wallace then pressured the hosts down the left as Scunthorpe continued to stamp their mark on the game.

On 11 minutes, the Iron had a penalty shout denied as Poulter went down under a challenge.

Soon after, receiving a left-wing cross from Charley Strouther, Wallace sent in a low shot which the home goalkeeper got down to save.

With 17 minutes played, Harvey Cribb sent in a deep cross looking for Wallace, who won a corner. It was sent in and cleared away from immediate danger on three occasions as the Iron threatened to score.

Five minutes later, Scunthorpe were awarded a penalty when a brilliant driving run by Josh Robertson saw him dance into the box before being brought down. Poulter then coolly slotted home the penalty.

Following the first goal, a great move by the Iron saw Robertson try to get a shot away down the right but it was blocked out for a corner. Wallace took and Sellars-Fleming connected but the ball ricocheted back into play off the crossbar.

With half an hour played, the hosts attacked with a shot from the left side of the area going wide at Ewan Oxborough’s near post.

It was a spell of pressure from them as they came more into the game, with a shot from the left hitting the side netting at Oxborough’s right-hand post.

On 38 minutes, Scunthorpe doubled their advantage when brilliant play from Wallace saw him weaves down the left side of the box and play it to Poulter who, at the second attempt, scored his second goal of the game.

On the stroke of half-time, the Iron won a free-kick down the right which Strouther swung in but the goalkeeper saved it.

Three minutes into the second period, Strouther sent in a corner from the left which Sellars-Fleming almost converted home, but the hosts managed to just clear the ball.

Scunthorpe scored again on 53 minutes though, as Sellars-Fleming got on the scoresheet, smashing home after a corner was played short to Poulter and he then received the ball before firing into the net.

Three minutes later, Poulter got his hat-trick, sweeping home from close range after Sellars-Fleming played a square ball to his strike partner.

It was five in the 63rd minute as Poulter got his fourth. Wallace pressed and won possession on the edge of the box before playing in the forward, who converted.

With 66 minutes played, Poulter was prevented from getting his fifth, as a close range header was saved after he connected with a right-wing cross.

Nevertheless, Scunthorpe made it six with 72 minutes gone. Sellars-Fleming scored, Firing low and across the goalkeeper into the far corner from the edge of the 18-yard box.

On 83 minutes, Poulter looked to test the goalkeeper again but his effort from the edge of the area was blocked.

With four minutes left, Sellars-Fleming was denied his hat-trick with a point blank range save by the goalkeeper after excellent pressure down the left from Strouther.

Then, almost at the death, Oxborough was drawn into action, saving low down to his left after a home attacker was played in down the right.
