O'Malley looking to build on 'good point' at Barnet

31 October 2022

Defender Mason O’Malley spoke to Iron Player following the 1-1 away draw at Barnet on Friday night.

The full-back registered his 13th appearance of the season, playing the full duration in nine of those so far.

Speaking on the game, the 21-year-old said: “I’d say it was a good result, taking a point, as it’s a tough place to come.

“It hurts a little bit when you take the lead and there’s not long left, but I do think it’s a good point and we’ll take it.”

Before Friday night, Barnet had scored 21 goals in seven games, a statistic which the lads knew heading into the game.

“We did our homework on them,” he started.

“The coaching staff gave us the information that they do score a lot of goals so one-all and conceding that goal is disappointing but it’s a tough place to come.

“We defended well at times; we won a lot of headers, made a lot of blocks and clearances.

“For the goal, we’ve scored and dropped too deep maybe, and that’s what gets you into trouble.

“I feel like the only thing we’re really at fault for is the goal,” he ended.

The Iron made it a return of four points in six from the week after backing up the mid-week Tuesday night victory against Gateshead with a draw at Barnet.

“We went on a bit of an unbeaten run which came to an end but it’s all about starting a new one.

“We’ve started with three points on Tuesday night, picked up another draw and now hopefully we can carry it on next Tuesday.”

O’Malley found himself dropped from the game against Southend United last Saturday, after previously in United’s prior six.

Talking on returning to the first team line-up, he said: “Being left out the side is never easy but I’m just happy to be back involved and getting minutes.

“I wanted to come and put a positive performance in as I feel like situations like that could go one way or the other, as I could’ve come in and took it the wrong way, but it was all about coming back in and showing what I can do.

Looking ahead to a busy period for the Iron, which sees the team head south again to Eastleigh on Tuesday, O’Malley said: “We’ve got that time to recover [with the Iron playing on Friday and not the Saturday] but I think we need to use it wisely.

“This period tends to be a busy one and we’ve got a lot of games coming up so it’s just about recovering well and preparing right.

“Confidence is a massive thing in football, and we need to use that to our advantage to take it into the next game."
