Report: Iron U18s 4-1 Walsall U18s

5 November 2022

The Iron’s Under-18s remained undefeated in the EFL Youth Alliance League Cup, winning 4-1 at home against Walsall on Saturday morning.

Victory against Walsall made it seven undefeated, in all competitions, for the young Iron after the quick turn-around from Thursday night’s FA Youth Cup victory at home to Solihull Moors.

Harrison Poulter opened the scoring for the Iron, after being teed up by Ed Devine. Walsall cleared the ball, which was picked-up on by Devine, who slotted Poulter in to poke past the ‘keeper.

Sellars-Fleming netted the Iron’s second from a corner. A scramble in the area ended up at the feet of the attacker, who got the last touch to send it into the back of the net.

A brace followed for Sellars-Fleming, who got his second and the Iron’s third of the game. A driving run towards the goal, and his man, saw the attacker cut the ball onto his favoured left foot across into the corner.

Shay Larkin setup Poulter for the fourth and his brace too, slipping in the striker who cut inside to place his shot inside the bottom of the post.

Professional development phase coach Rob Watson spoke following the 4-1 victory, saying: “It was a dominant performance.

“I was a little bit worried that we’d have some tired bodies from the quick turnaround of Thursday to Saturday, but we came out and put a dominant performance in.

“We were really good in possession, excellent out of it, and we’ve got another three points in the Youth Alliance Cup group that we’re in still.

“We’re undefeated in seven now too which is great, and we’ve got two strikers on the pitch who keep scoring goals so I’m happy with that.

Overall, it was a really good team performance and with the next game being Barnsley away in the FA Youth Cup, we head into that unbeaten and off the back of a 4-1 win, so we’ll enjoy the week and get ready for that game."
