Flashback: Port Vale

27 January 2022

As the Iron prepare to visit Port Vale this weekend, we look back at some memorable past fixtures against the Valiants.

LOFT BRACE SEALS HOME WIN LAST SEASON
Iron 2-0 Port Vale
Tuesday, January 26th, 2021

Ryan Loft scored a first-half brace as Scunthorpe moved further clear of the League Two relegation zone with a 2-0 victory over Port Vale.

Loft bagged both the Iron's goals in the space of seven first-half minutes.

The Valiants were the first to threaten when skipper Tom Conlon's low drive was gathered at the second attempt by home goalkeeper Mark Howard, but then it all went wrong for the away side.

Loft did brilliantly to roll his man on halfway before driving forward and drilling the ball into the far corner from a tight angle to score his sixth goal of the campaign in the 26th minute.

He did not have to wait long for his seventh, which came from point-blank range after Scott Brown had parried Alex Gilliead's initial effort.

Vale improved after the break on the back of a triple substitution, but could not make their possession count.

Conlon chipped one of few half-chances tamely into the arms of Howard, who was later perfectly placed to keep out a glancing header from David Amoo.

They flung an array of balls into the box in search of a way back into the game, but the Scunthorpe defence held firm.

HOPPER WINNER EDGES FIVE-GOAL THRILLER
Iron 3-2 Port Vale
Saturday, January 27th, 2017

Tom Hopper came off the bench to fire Scunthorpe back to the top of the League One table with a 71st-minute winner in their 3-2 victory at home to Port Vale.

But they did it the hard way, twice having to come from behind after the visitors had impressed in the early stages.

Vale came close to snatching a 26th-minute lead when striker JJ Hooper rifled a 25-yard effort just inches over.

Hooper was involved again when Vale did open the scoring in the 38th minute. His low angled shot from the right was well pushed away by home keeper Luke Daniels, but straight into the path of Tyler Walker who produced a clinical finish.

Scunthorpe came storming out in the second half and were back on level terms in the 49th minute when Josh Morris crashed home his 19th goal of the season from the penalty spot after a needless foul in the box on Craig Davies by centre-back Remie Streete.

But Vale stood firm and were back in front in the 59th minute when slack marking in the Scunthorpe defence allowed Hooper to find room in the box to steer home his shot from a low right-wing cross.

Three minutes later and Scunthorpe were back level again when a flick-on from Davies saw Ivan Toney net a debut goal with a measured lob from the edge of the box beyond the outstretched reach of keeper Jak Alnwick.

And they edged in front for the first time in the 71st minute when substitute Hopper raced in at the edge of the six-yard box to crack home a glorious low left-wing cross from full-back Harry Toffolo for what proved to be the winner.

SHARP BRACE GETS IRON GOING IN 2006
Iron 3-0 Port Vale
Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Billy Sharp struck twice, with Ian Morris also scoring a first goal for the club, as United recovered from a defeat at Oldham Athletic three days earlier, to defeat the Valiants 3-0 at home and well and truly kickstart their 2006-07 League One title-winning season.

After a slow start to the campaign, the win well and truly got the Iron moving in the right direction.

After a Dave Mulligan left-wing corner, Sharp bundled in the first from close range, before he soon volleyed in a second following a right wing corner.

Morris' low shot from the edge of the area then sealed the victory in the second-half.
