With three minutes gone, Tom Collins made an early save just seconds after Spalding had a penalty about turned down. The Iron got the ball clear and away for a throw on the near side.
The resultant throw came in long, with Gregg Smith getting a flick on which was gathered by Collins. Scunthorpe quickly mounted an attack and had their first corner at the other end.
After nine minutes, striker Joe Nuttall twice combined, once in midfield before a one-two with Luke Matheson on the right. The latter saw his low cross turned away for a corner. Nuttall peeled away from the corner, sending his volley wide of the target.
Not long after, Spalding won a free-kick on the edge of the box, with Floyd taking, sending the ball high and wide of the target.
After 20 minutes, there was a good chance for the hosts as Lloyd swung in a free-kick from the right. Smith connected, but sent the ball just wide of Tom Collins’ right-hand post.
A minute later, Broccoli had a speculative effort from 25-yards, with the ball bouncing up off the surface before being gathered by Collins.
With half an hour on the clock, Hayden Hackney and Matheson both combined a couple of times down the right before the ball was fed to Trialist A, who let the ball run to his left foot before sending a 25-yard effort wide.
Three minutes after, the Iron played a free-kick short to Matheson, who took one touch before seeing his low, powerful effort from 25-yards blocked. The ball found its way into the area where Trialist A was lurking, but he put it wide - and was also flagged offside.
On 36 minutes there was a superb save from Collins low down to his left as he denied Seymour-Shove’s low drive from the edge of the box. The Iron ‘keeper then gathered at the second attempt.
Three minutes later, Nuttall battled well down the left and won a double ricochet to send himself clear. He cut onto his right foot inside the box and sent a shot into the side-netting.
After 41 minutes, Hackney did well down the left and pushed the ball infield to Beestin. His powerful effort with his left foot was deflected three times, the last of which off an Iron player, and headed out for a goal kick.
Trialist B got down the left and was pulled back, resulting in a free-kick to the Iron. Hackney had a go from the free-kick, from an acute angle, with the goalkeeper beating away. Spalding broke, with Pugh putting in a fine challenge to halt the run on goal.
Two minutes into it, Alfie Beestin had the first shot of the second half from range, sending a right-footed effort wide.
Soon after, Hackney played a free-kick quickly to Pugh. He then found the speedy run of Jordan Hallam down the left, with the low cross flashing across the face of goal before being touched out by the home defence.
On 50 minutes, Trialist B muscled his way into the box down the left, but the home goalkeeper did well on his cutback to pounce on the ball with bodies around him.
At the other end, Collins then got down sharply to his right as a low cross was put into the area from the right after the hosts were slipped into the area.
In the 57th minute, Hackney’s free-kick into the area was a good delivery, with the ball ending up at the back post with Trialist B. The Iron looked to tee up a shot with Beestin and Matheson, amongst others, but the home defence put bodies in the way.
Not long afterwards, the Iron went from defence to attack, as Collins found Matheson. He went crossfield to Pugh before Hallam got in behind. He kept the attack alive before sending a looping half-volley wide shortly after.
There was a Scunthorpe change in the 62nd minute as Nuttall was replaced by Harry Jessop.
On 64 minutes, Smith tried a right-footed curling effort from 25-yards out for the hosts, but saw his shot fly wide of Collins’ left post.
Then the hosts got into some space following good work from Smith before a shot from range went sailing over.
In the 73rd minute there was a chance for Jessop as he muscled his way into the box before drawing the keeper into a save.
The subsequent corner was turned home from close range by Trialist A after the hosts failed to deal with the delivery into the six-yard box.
Three minutes after, Collins made a superb save to deny MacLeod’s powerful drive before Gallimore somehow prevented the rebound from going over the line from point blank range. It was superb defending from the Iron’s skipper for the night.
Collins then made a comfortable save down to his left as MacLeod had another effort on goal.
In the 80th minute, Hackney and Trialist A combined to slip Jessop into the area. His shot was turned behind for a corner. Soon after, Hallam was denied by the home shot stopper after getting a touch on a cross from the left.
With 84 minutes gone, there was a second for the Iron as Pugh drove down the left, cut onto his right foot and angled a shot across goal and into the far corner of the net.
However, four minutes later he was red carded, along with a Spalding player following a melee over on the far side. A Spalding player was also yellow carded as both teams got involved.
Then, in the 90th minute, Sam Cartwright got one back for the hosts from close range as the ball came back into play off the post.
There was a final Scunthorpe change as Josh Robertson came on for Jordan Hallam, but the Iron held on for the victory.
