Pugh reflects on Yeovil and looks ahead to Wrexham

16 December 2022

Iron midfielder Tom Pugh has reflected on the week gone by and looked ahead to Saturday's Isuzu FA Trophy third round tie against Wrexham.

Tom began by speaking about last weekend's draw, away at Yeovil, saying: "Personally, I thought we did enough to get the three points. As a team we can build on that because that’s the first clean sheet we’ve had in a while.

"I still think as a team we need to expect more from each other though as that’s a game where we should be getting three points.”

He was also asked about the togetherness of the team, adding: “That is what is going to make us climb the table. As a team we need to work hard in and out of possession, and we need to improve our finishing. I think we had a few chances where we should have put at least one in the back of the net, but that’s football for you.”

On playing alongside Fin Shrimpton in the centre of midfield, he said: “Me and Fin have played loads of games together in the youth set up, so it was nice to see him get his National League debut. He put a great performance in, he brought a lot of energy into the team, and that bounces back with me.”

Pugh has been used in several positions over the years, and he spoke about this too, saying: “I don’t mind where I play, as long as I’m on the pitch, I’ll always put 110 per cent."

He then went on to speak about the week gone by, continuing: “Everyone’s been bubbly. It’s a point we needed, but like I’ve already said, we really should be making that three points. We’re going to work hard and focus on the FA Trophy.”

Tuesday’s home game against Woking was called off due to weather conditions, and Tom was disappointed that the team didn’t get the opportunity to play.

He said: “I thought with the performance we’d had, it would have been nice to play again straight away. Coming home and putting in a good performance would have been nice, but unfortunately it was called off.”

On rising to the challenge of this weekend's opposition, he said: “As a player you always want to play in these big matches in trophies, especially against a big side. Everyone’s looking forward to it.”

Finally, Tom spoke about nailing down his position in the team. He said: “As a player you want to play every single game. Personally, I know I always put in 110 per cent week in week out.”
