9 August 2022

Remembering past matches played by the Iron on August 9...

Former Iron players born on this day: Aaron O’Connor (1983), Sam Burns (2002).

United advanced to the second round of the Capital One Cup after extra time in 2016, with Notts County the victims of a Kevin van Veen brace.

The Iron last played in the league on this day in 2014 when they opened the league campaign at Swindon Town. Paddy Madden netted for United, but the side lost Dave Syers to a long term injury, Marcus Williams to suspension and topped it off with suffering defeat at the County Ground.

Scunthorpe lost out to Leeds United on this day in 2008 en route to play-off success, with Gary Hooper netting a debut goal for the club. Jermaine Beckford would score against the Iron, netting the winner.

Probably the highlight on this day sees us go back to 2005 when United hosted Barnsley in their first home game since returning to League One. Paul Hayes returned to Glanford Park to haunt his old club, putting the Tykes ahead at the Doncaster Road end - his celebration then subject to taunts from the home supporters.

Andy Crosby dispatched a penalty soon after to restore parity after Matt Sparrow was sent sprawling in the area with Cleveland Taylor powering home the winner in the second half, leaving the visiting goalkeeper with absolutely no chance.

Overall playing record for August 9: Played 8, Won 4, Drawn 0, Lost 4, Scored 12, Conceded 11.
