Under-23s preview: Grimsby Town (A)

6 January 2021

The Iron's Under-23s play their third Central League game of the season this Wednesday with an away clash against Grimsby Town (1pm kick-off).

Please note, in line with the current EFL COVID-19 guidelines, no spectators are permitted at these games.

SCENE-SETTER

It's the third game of the season for the Iron's Under-23s side after only playing the second game of the campaign seven days ago.

Both of those matches came against Huddersfield Town, with the away fixture resulting in a 4-0 win with Andy Dales, Olufela Olomola, Devarn Green and Kenan Dünnwald-Turan netting. The latest match a week ago saw United field a much more junior side, although they did lead 2-0 through goals from George Hornshaw and Dales, while the Championship side's second string came back in the second 45 to draw 2-2.

Wednesday's game is the third of eight matches played in the Central League during what will be a reduced season due to the COVID-19 situation, and these fixtures are scheduled to come thick and fast over the next few weeks. Click here to see a fixture list.

The Mariners come into the game having played two of their own matches so far this season. They began the campaign with a 3-2 home win over Walsall back on October 13th, while they lost 6-3 on home soil to the Terriers on November 4th.

The Iron are second in the division with four points from two games, while Grimsby are fourth out of five in Group C with three points from a possible six. League leaders Huddersfield Town have 13 points from a possible 18 having already played six out of their eight games.

TEAM NEWS

The game will once again be used as an opportunity to get important game time into players who have been on the fringes of the first team in recent weeks, as well as some returning from injury.

Harry Jessop and Andy Dales both got gametime last week as they returned from injuries, while George Hornshaw skippered the side and scored a brilliant long range effort. Tom Pugh didn't feature last weekend, nor did Kenan Dünnwald-Turan, but both could be involved this week.

Charlie Barks, currently on loan at Frickley Athletic, is eligible to play and is in line to continue to start, especially considering the third national lockdown coming in this week which will halt National League football, while fellow first year professionals Tom Collins and Raynner Silva both started last week. Fin Shrimpton is still sidelined with an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, the side was supplemented with some of the Iron's Under-18 players last week, with three (Harry Baker, Dan Gallimore and Joey Dawson) both starting a week ago. United finished the game with six on the pitch, with Oliver Kemp, Oliver Lobley and Ethan Young all coming on.
