The 27-year-old also turned to Saturday’s final away fixture of the season, at Bradford City, and called on his teammates to stand up and be counted.

“It’s not acceptable. The scoreline shows it. It was a tough night, and they are a good side,” he said, talking to iFollow Iron.

“We’ve got two games left now and the fate is in our hands. We’ve got to go and get a result. We’ve got to play better than we did tonight. It’s the same situation - the basics, marking and an own goal. It didn’t look like we worked hard enough as a team.”

Despite not threatening in the open exchanges in attack, the Iron had absorbed up the pressure from the hosts in the first 30 minutes prior to Taft’s unfortunate own goal, which was then followed by another two goals from the Exiles before the break.

Speaking about the quick-fire goals conceded, he continued: “It’s something we need to get out of our game. When we go a goal down, we need to fight, bond together and get back in it. We didn’t tonight and it’s cost us.

“We owe it to the fans, to ourselves and the staff. We need to get a result. We’ve got two games to put it right and get a result.

“It’s all about the next game, that’s the most important thing. It’s our livelihoods on the line. We’re at a club that treats us well, everything about the club is good and at the minute, we are letting everyone down.

“We’ve got to come together and really go out there and show what we can do.”

Having played a number of teams in recent weeks all fighting for promotion at one end of the table, United’s final two opponents effectively have nothing to play for having sealed mid-table finishes.

Taft affirmed the side must continue to focus on trying to get that result to see the Iron over the line.

“We’ve got something to play for and that’s all that matters,” he stated.

“It’s all about us and what we do. We’ve got to go out there on Saturday and show why we’ve got this shirt on. We’ve got to finish the season with pride and whatever comes next season, we’ve got to be a lot better.”
