I have been very fortunate to have met Ray on numerous occasions, here at the club with his wife Vee, on the golf course and at many a Prostate Cancer UK event. He was a true gentleman, he had a real love for Scunthorpe United and he did not forget how important the club was to him at the beginning of his career.
I remember him playing mainly because I was a Leicester fan and Shilts was keeping him out of the England team, a time in our history when we as a country had the finest goalkeepers in the world.
To look back and realise he played 1000+ games is truly amazing and that can only be put down to a tremendously professional attitude and resilience, something he utilised in his long fight against a cancer which unfortunately would just not leave him alone.
Personally, I wish I could have known him earlier and for longer, but I will really appreciate the time I spent with him and we will all miss him greatly, as a sporting icon in this country, but more importantly for me and my family as a friend.
From all here at Scunthorpe United, RIP Ray.
