Iron Under-23s to host Shrewsbury Town Under-23s in Premier League Cup

27 August 2019

The Iron's Under-23s have been drawn face their Shrewsbury Town counterparts in the first qualifying round of the Premier League Cup.

Everton's Under-23 side beat Newcastle United's Under-23s in the final last year, with Scunthorpe making their debut in the competition, which adopts the UEFA Champions League format.

The encounter will take place at the Sands Venue Stadium on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, kick-off 7pm.

Admission for the encounter will be £3 for adults and £1 for over-65s and under-18s in the Lincs Lifts Stand only, while 12th Man holders for the 2019-20 season can gain entry free of charge providing they produce their season ticket card on the turnstile.

The winners of the match will face either Fleetwood Town Under-23s or Southend United Under-23s away from home.

Competition Format

  • Qualifying stage: If more than 32 clubs enter the competition, a qualifying knock-out stage takes place between Category 3 and 4 clubs to determine who joins Category 1 and 2 sides in the Group stage.
  • Group stage: The tournament will be split into eight groups of four clubs, with each team playing their opposing clubs home and away. The top two teams advance to the knockout stage.
  • Knockout stage: The last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will all be one-off knockout ties. If the ties are level after 90 minutes, they go to extra-time and then penalties if the teams still can't be separated.
