BIG MATCH PREVIEW: SOUTHEND UNITED v IRON

3 February 2017

The Iron head to Roots Hall this weekend, as they clash with Southend United in Sky Bet League One.

Last Saturday’s comeback victory against Port Vale meant Scunthorpe returned to the summit of the table, and they’ll be looking to build on that in the upcoming encounter with the Shrimpers.

Phil Brown’s men are dangerous opposition though, with them sitting on the very fringes of a spot in the play-offs.

Iron boss Graham Alexander says David Mirfin, Conor Townsend and Paddy Madden are all progressing well from their respective injury lay-offs.

Alexander stressed the importance of not rushing any of the injured bodies back - in particular Mirfin, who hasn’t featured since picking up a foot injury against Coventry City in November.

One man who is a little further away is full-back Jordan Clarke (hamstring), and Alexander confirmed the 25-year-old will definitely miss this weekend’s game.

Goals from Paddy Madden, Kevin van Veen, Josh Morris and Richie Smallwood saw Alexander’s men triumph 4-0 over Saturday’s opponents, back in September 2016.

Despite the emphatic scoreline, it took the Iron 36 minutes to find the breakthrough at Glanford Park, as Madden swept the ball home following a low cross from Duane Holmes.

The Irishman’s goal set the wheels in motion, and Scunthorpe got another five minutes later when van Veen turned home Morris’ pinpoint delivery from the right.

Two more delightful goals after the break then added some gloss to the scoreline, as firstly Morris and then Smallwood both lashed home superb strikes in the 57th and 87th minute respectively.
