The 35-year-old made some important saves last weekend and he will be hoping he can replicate that performance again.

In the absence of skipper Rory McArdle, Gilks speaks about wearing the armband, reflects on last Saturday’s 2-2 draw and previews the Southend match in an interview with iFollow Iron

ON LAST WEEKEND’S DRAW AT HOME TO MK DONS…

MG: As the game panned out, we were probably pleased with a draw especially in the second half after Neal Bishop got sent off. If we had 11 players on that pitch, I think we would have gone on to win that game.

ON ENJOYING HIS FOOTBALL…

MG: I love what I do. I get up every day with a smile on my face. I just want to be out there diving around. I’m 35 but I feel like I’m 25.

ON FOCUSING ON EACH GAME…

MG: It’s every game as it comes. We’ve looked at the MK Dons game and now we have put it to bed. We are now looking forward to Southend and now the games our coming thick and fast over the Christmas period. We need to recover well and prepare well.

ON SOUTHEND UNITED…

MG: Southend are having an indifferent season, everyone thought they would have been up there. They’ve had good wins here and there and then a couple of defeats. It’s just the way the league is. We are not going to take them lightly, we need to be on our game as you do on every game.

ON WEARING THE CAPTAIN’S ARMBAND…

MG: I am absolutely delighted with it and very proud to be putting that armband on. I’m thankful I got it after Rory McArdle was unfortunately injured.

ON RETURNING TO BLACKPOOL ON BOXING DAY…

MG: I have a lot of good memories from there. I’m looking forward to be going back and seeing a lot of familiar faces.
