BIG MATCH PREVIEW: WALSALL v IRON

27 September 2016

The Iron travel to Walsall on Tuesday night, as they look to retain their place at the top of the League One table.

Saturday’s draw with Sheffield United ensured Graham Alexander’s side remained first in the standings, one point ahead of second-placed Bury.

The hosts will provide a stern test though, having taken all three points from former leaders Bolton Wanderers of late.

Graham Alexander says he’ll have the same squad to choose from for the game at the Banks's Stadium.

Alexander was pleased with the returning Tom Hopper, who came on in the second half against Sheffield United, and the Iron boss felt he came through his minutes well.

It was goal-less the last time the two sides met, back in March of this year.

In a first half of few chances at the Banks's Stadium, Paddy Madden had the best chance, as he saw his free-kick well saved by Saddlers stopper Neil Etheridge.

The game opened up in the second half, and both teams created chances. The first of which fell to Milan Lalkovic, but he was denied by Luke Daniels, before Conor Townsend fired a shot wide.

Tom Hopper had United’s best opportunity, however he was frustrated when he saw his goal-bound strike cleared off the goal-line.

A summer acquisition following his release from Blackburn Rovers, Simeon Jackson has made an impressive start to life at Walsall.

The Canadian has featured ten times for the Saddlers so far, and has a near enough one-in-two strike rate, with him finding the back of the net four times already.

Two of those strikes came on his debut, as he and his teammates brushed aside AFC Wimbledon 3-1 on the opening day of the season.
