CONGRATULATIONS SIR IAN BOTHAM

3 November 2016

The Iron would like to congratulate Vice President Sir Ian Botham OBE after it was announced earlier today he is set to become the chairman of Durham.

As an international cricketer for England, he took 383 wickets in 102 Tests as well as scoring 5,200 runs which included fourteen centuries.

He mainly played for Somerset, but "Beefy" also played for Durham in their inaugural first-class season in 1992, remaining with them to end his playing career a year later.

Speaking following his appointment, he said: "As someone who lives locally it is an honour to have the opportunity to contribute to the club's future, to look forward and to continue to produce the talent that will serve both the county and England well in the years ahead.

"We will work closely with the ECB and Durham County Council in the months ahead as we develop a plan to ensure continued success for this great club."

Everyone at the football club is delighted and proud of the former player's new appointment and wish him every success going forward.
