U18 SIDE EDGED OUT AT MANSFIELD

The Iron’s U18 side were beaten 2-1 in testing conditions at Mansfield Town.

The match was played in extremely strong winds and this really affected the game on a difficult playing surface at Rainworth MW.

After dominating the early proceedings with Noel Burdett prominent for the Iron on numerous occasions, it was Mansfield who took the lead on 21 minutes much against the run of play.

Following a throw-in on their left, the home team managed to slot home at the near post with the Iron a little hesitant in dealing with the danger.

The Iron equalised on 86 minutes when an excellent run and cross from Sonny Shilling saw Jack Dyche level the score with a good finish.

In a dramatic end to the game, Town scored in the 88th minute to beat the league leaders and to become the first team to beat the Iron’s youngsters since October.

Academy Manager Tony Daws said: "It's been a fantastic achievement and a really good learning experience for our youngsters to top the league table.

“Being top creates a situation where every team works harder to beat you and our boys have experienced two really tough games in the last week. This is great for their on-going development.”
