MANNER OF WIN DELIGHTS WALLACE

15 February 2016

Iron defender Murray Wallace praised the team's display in their 1-0 victory over Southend United at Glanford Park.

Wallace felt Paddy Madden's early goal was vital and, with it, United were able to kick on in the game.

"They're a good team, they're up and around the play-offs for a reason and they've been on a good run," he told The Iron PlayerHD.

"It was a bit disappointing last week, with the game getting called off. But we just carried on with the form and got another three points.

"I think any team which gets an early goal, it settles them a bit and we really thrived on that. I thought we were really impressive in the first half.

"We've maybe got to be a bit more clinical, but we're creating the chances so it's got to be positive for the club, the fans and for the team. We can take confidence from it."

Murray Wallace won the Twitter man of the match vote at the weekend.

The Scot was part of a defence which the Shrimpers couldn't breach, and he was elated to keep out a Southend side which has been in good goalscoring form of late.

"They've been scoring a few goals, and they're in good form, so it's nice to get a clean sheet against them," he said.

"They were throwing a few bodies at us towards the end, in the last ten to fifteen minutes, and they were always going to do that but we did well to see it out."

As well as turning in an impressive defensive display, Wallace also provided a threat in the opposing box, hitting the crossbar with a thundering header.

However, for Wallace, goals are something which he's always looking to add to his game.

"To be honest I thought I headed it a bit high anyway, so when I saw it hit the bar, I hoped it would go in off the underside, but it wasn't to be," he stated.

"I had a few more chances, and the delivery today was brilliant, they just kept finding me and, if I'm being harsh on myself, I probably should have scored.

"I'm always looking to score. Me and Mirf (David Mirfin) are big presences in the box, and we try to cause a bit of carnage in there."
