BIG MATCH PREVIEW: BOLTON WANDERERS (A)

30 December 2016

The Iron round off 2016 with a New Year’s Eve trip to face Bolton Wanderers at the Macron Stadium.

Both sides have enjoyed impressive campaigns so far, with Graham Alexander and Phil Parkinson’s men sitting first and third in the table respectively.

There’s little to choose between the two teams in terms of points also, and in fact only two points covers the top three in Sky Bet League One.

Iron boss Alexander says all of his players came through the Boxing Day match against Bradford City unscathed, and added that he’s an almost full squad to choose from.

Alexander revealed that David Mirfin is still a fair distance off returning to first team action, and went on to to say that Conor Townsend came through his recent operation successfully.

United last met Bolton back in 2001, and were on the wrong side of a 5-1 scoreline in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Dean Holdsworth stole the show for Wanderers, as he fired a superb hat-trick, which was accompanied by a brace from Kevin Nolan.

Spaniard Alex Calvo-Garcia had given the Iron hope on 30 minutes when he halved the deficit to make it 2-1, but Sam Allardyce’s team were just too strong on the day.

After joining the club at just eight-years-old, Zach Clough has gone onto establish himself as a first team regular for the Whites.
