Assessing United’s 2-0 (AET) victory over Notts County in the EFL Cup first round, defender David Mirfin states getting through was the main priority, no matter how it was done.

The Iron managed to break the deadlock in the 99th minute, thanks to the first of two goals from Kevin van Veen, and Mirfin says they got the test which they were predicting.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Mirfin said: “Obviously it was all about the result, and that’s what we’ve got.

“We expected a battle before the game, and obviously with the video analysis which was put on for us, we knew what to expect, and I think we dealt with it well.

“They almost play with a back six and they ask you to come and break them down. We’ve had to be patient, but we stuck to our task and we’ve got the result we deserved."

It was another impressive defensive showing from Mirfin and the back four which he’s part of, but the centre back was quick to point out that it’s a team effort.

“It’s not just me and Muzza (Murray Wallace). Obviously the lads either side of us and Luke (Daniels) behind us play a huge part too,” he stated.

“He made a brilliant save one on one to keep us in it. All the lads are working hard to keep that solid base, so the lads in the attacking positions can go and win it for us.

Sam Mantom came on for his Iron debut against the Magpies, and after enduring a frustrating start to his United career, Mirfin hopes the arrival from Walsall can now kick on.

“He’ll be happy to get some minutes on the pitch, because he’s been working hard in training to get back fit again,” he explained.

“It’s been frustrating for him. I think when you go to a new club and you pick up a niggle, it is hard. Hopefully, now he can build on that in training and get more minutes.
