BIG MATCH PREVIEW: FLEETWOOD TOWN (A)

12 August 2016

United head to Fleetwood Town full of confidence after making it two wins from two this season, with victory over Notts County in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

It’s back to league matters at the Highbury Stadium on Saturday though, with three more points the aim for Graham Alexander and his side.

It’ll be Alexander’s first time back at the Cod Army since leaving the club in September last year.

The Iron are waiting on Tom Hopper, who had to pull out of Tuesday night’s clash with Notts County through illness, and manager Alexander says it’s too early to judge at this moment in time.

Alexander too was pleased to welcome Sam Mantom into the side after his recovery from injury, and says he’ll continue to be monitored ahead of the visit to Fleetwood.

There’s good news on striker Paddy Madden though, with the Scunthorpe boss revealing the Irishman is back out jogging on the grass, after missing the start of the season with a calf problem.

The Iron were narrowly edged out the last time the two sides met, in February of this year, after slipping to a 2-1 away loss.

First-half strikes from Ashley Hunter and Bobby Grant set the hosts on their way, and Grant’s goal would prove to be the winner, with Paddy Madden halving the deficit from the penalty spot on 70 minutes.

After joining the club from Preston North End in 2012, Conor McLaughlin has been a mainstay in the Fleetwood Town starting eleven ever since.

Making over 40 appearances in each of the past three seasons, the full-back has become a vital figure at the Cod Army in his four-year stint so far.

His impressive and consistent displays were rewarded this summer too, with McLaughlin featuring in Northern Ireland’s Euro 2016 campaign.
