The Iron's youth team were beaten 2-0 by Shrewsbury Town in the Youth Alliance Cup first round on Saturday.
Scunthorpe made a poor start to the game and fell behind after only two minutes when the visitors found space to get behind the left-side of the defence, and the cut-back was then turned in at the far post. The Shrews extended their lead on 33 minutes from a throw-in as the Iron allowed an away striker to latch on to a throughball to slide the ball home.
United competed much better in the second half but found chances difficult to create against a resolute visiting defence.
Jack Dyche did well on the hour mark working his way free and his pass across the six-yard line was a gift but no Iron player was on hand and the chance was lost.
Iron academy manager Tony Daws said: "Today we were not at it like we have been in the first three games of the season. We conceded two sloppy goals and never really got going - as a group.
"We have lots to learn from today and plenty to work on."
