PREVIEW: OLDHAM ATHLETIC (A)

26 September 2014

The Iron travel to Oldham Athletic on Saturday for our tenth fixture of the Sky Bet League One season.

Russ Wilcox’s men have had seven days to rest, train and prepare for the fixture with Lee Johnson’s side, after Leyton Orient were winners at Glanford Park last week.

The Iron manager confirmed the signing of Shaun Brisley in his weekly press conference, on loan from Peterborough, and the defender is set to make his debut in the Saturday’s clash.

Eddie Nolan is a doubt after taking a knock in the reserve game on Tuesday, while Lyle Taylor has a thigh strain, but Neal Bishop could return to the side after resuming training last week.

Athletic have had an indifferent start to the 2014/15 campaign, winning two, drawing five and losing twice, but they are currently unbeaten in their last five matches.

Their ground, originally named Boundary Park, is  a 110-year-old structure which is currently undergoing renovation, with increased capacity and added facilities.

The Latics’ manager, Lee Johnson, took over the club in 2013 and he was the youngest manager in the Football League.

Now 33, he is enjoying his first spell as manager, following in the footsteps of dad Gary Johnson, who currently managers fellow League One side Yeovil.

Johnson, a former midfielder, made over 400 appearances for Brighton, Yeovil, Hearts, Bristol City, Derby, Chesterfield and Kilmarnock.

The clash represents the 44th competitive meeting between the two clubs, with the Iron coming out on top 15 times, drawing 16 and losing on 12 occasions.

We last met the club in the 2012/13 season and it was a score draw both times. Niall Canavan and Mark Duffy scored for the Iron (Cliff Byrne scored for Oldham) when we drew 2-2 at Glanford Park. The reverse fixture saw us share the points in a 1-1 draw as Leon Clark netted for the Claret and Blue.

If you aren’t making the trip to Greater Manchester at the weekend, keep track of the action by tuning into the club’s official social media channels or keep an eye on events on the website, with live updates available from kick-off and also see our betting preview for the match.
