MAKING ENQUIRIES

19 September 2014

Iron manager Russ Wilcox has confirmed that he has made enquiries about two central midfield players, as he looks to bring another body in on loan.

Neal Bishop recently joined long term injury absentee Dave Syers on the side lines, leaving United short of options in the middle of the park.

Wilcox admitted he has made movements to bring a player in on a temporary basis but expressed his frustration that he hasn’t been able to so far.

He told The Iron Player: “We’ve made loan enquiries about two central midfield players because we’re a little bit light in there.

“But then again I’ve got to be careful that I don’t nullify Levi Sutton’s development as well because he’s massively important for this football club.

“We’re speaking about the development of the young players and about this group being the best we’ve had for 10 years so we have to give them those opportunities.

“But a couple of enquiries have gone in. One is with a Championship club and I’m still waiting to hear back.

“We’ve had a couple of knockbacks where we’ve had a possible yes and then they got an injury and it became a no.

“We understand how that works, you have to look after yourself first and foremost which obviously the clubs are doing and we’re still waiting for replies.”

United prepare to host Leyton Orient this weekend and Wilcox stated that he is hoping to bring a player in before the fixture.

He revealed that Bishop has only just resumed training and is reluctant to throw him straight back into the fold.

When asked if he is looking to recruit a player before the weekend, Wilcox said: “Yes, I think that’s important.

“Neal Bishop has only trained on Thursday and it was his first training session for 12 days so I have to ask myself whether he’ll be up to match speed.

“We know he’s got qualities and the physical capabilities but we’re not sure if he’s going to be able to show that against Orient on Saturday and we’ve got to make sure we don’t leave ourselves short.”

Two players that have been trying to impress the Scunthorpe manager are Nicky Featherstone and Rory Fallon, who are currently vying for a contract at the club.

And Wilcox said that he will have a further look at the duo during next week’s reserve game with Mansfield before making any definite decisions.

“We’re going to have a look again on Tuesday against Mansfield and then I’ll have to make some decisions,” he added.

“I’ve been impressed with them both. Their ability and their attitude in training and they both did well in the Doncaster game so I’ll have a final look on Tuesday and make a decision from there.”
