PAST TIMES: IRON v NOTTS COUNTY

7 October 2014

The Iron host Notts County on Tuesday night in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, after beating Chesterfield 2-0 at Glanford Park in the first round.

The two clubs have faced each other 23 times overall in all competitions, with Notts County winning 16 of those encounters, Scunthorpe winning four and three ending in draws.

The last times these two sides met, Notts County claimed victory at Meadow Lane, winning 1-0 on 16th March 2013.

Dean Leacock scored with ten minutes left to give the home side all three points.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER…

These two sides met in the Football League trophy back in 2008 and they did leave it late to book their place in the next round of the competition.

Midfielder Richard Butcher put the away side ahead early in the first half at Glanford Park and it looked set to be the winner and enough to send the Magpies through.

However, Paul Hayes had different ideas. The Iron striker scoring two goals in the 90th minute to snatch the victory from Notts County and send Scunthorpe through to the next round.

A POINT SHARED…

When these two sides met in League One back in 2012, neither side could find a winner as they earned a point each.

Christian Ribeiro opened the scoring for the home side before Lee Hughes equalised from a header for the away side midway through the first half. Damien Mozika then put the Iron ahead on the brink of half-time to send the claret and blue in at the break 2-1 ahead.

However, Paul Reid was sent off for the home side after a foul on Yoann Arquin. The ten men then couldn’t hold on as Lee Hughes grabbed his second of the afternoon ten minutes from time after tapping in at the back post.

TEN MEN LOSE LEAD…

When the two sides clashed at Meadow Lane in 2011, a red card for the Iron appeared costly as they lost a 2-1 lead to be defeated 3-2 by Notts County.

Former Iron centre-back Krystian Pearce headed the home side ahead with five minutes left of the first half, but Andy Barcham levelled just before half time. It was Bobby Grant who made it 2-1 to the Iron, finishing from a Mark Duffy cross.

Oliver Norwood was then sent off for the home side for a foul on Jeff Hughes. It was then Jeff Hughes who equalised for County, volleying in. Full-back Julian Kelly earned all three points for the home side late on.
