PAST TIMES: IRON v COLCHESTER

17 October 2014

The Iron welcome Colchester United to Glanford Park on Saturday for a fixture that they have enjoyed some success in over recent years.

You have to go back to 2005 to when the Iron last tasted defeat against the Essex side, a run spanning nine league games.

The two clubs have faced each other 58 times, with the Iron winning half of these encounters, Colchester winning 16 and there being 18 draws.

The last battle was a 2-1 away victory at the Weston Homes Community Stadium on 12 January 2013.

A late first half strike from Jimmy Ryan, coupled with an early second half goal from Karl Hawley, proving enough to secure victory despite a Freddie Sears consolation.

ON THEIR WAY…
28/03/09 - Scunthorpe United 3-0 Colchester

A brace from Gary Hooper and a goal from loanee Henri Lansbury helped to secure an emphatic victory as the Iron pushed towards promotion.

The League One encounter was decided by two finishes either side of half time from striker Gary Hooper, just two of his 30 in all competitions that season.

The third was added by Henri Lansbury, who was on loan from Arsenal, midway through the second half. The Iron would go on to beat Millwall in the play-off final to secure promotion.

THRILLING COMEBACK…
04/05/08 - Scunthorpe 3-3 Colchester

The Iron produced a great comeback to secure a 3-3 draw against Colchester at Glanford Park, although both teams ended up being relegated.

Kevin McLeod’s early opener for the Essex side was swiftly cancelled out by Jonathan Forte, but a second McLeod goal and a Scott Vernon strike put Colchester 3-1 up.

The turnaround was completed with a brace from Paul Hayes, with the equaliser coming eight minutes from time. The point would prove to be not enough as both ended up being relegated to League One.
