DAVID IS A BIG PART OF MY PLANS

23 May 2014

Iron manager Russ Wilcox is delighted that centre-half David Mirfin has agreed to sign a new two-year contract with the club.

His new deal will see the 29-year-old remain at Glanford Park until the end of the 2015/16 season.

Wilcox told Scunthorpe-United.co.uk: "David signing a new deal for the football club is a fantastic achievement.

"Last season we saw what he was about. He only missed one game during last season and he is a top acquisition for the football club."

The United manager says it is great for Mirfin and the club that this deal has been completed so soon after last season ended.

"I have spoke about keeping the core of last season's squad quite a lot and Mirfin is a big part of that," Wilcox explained.

"My priority is to get the spine of the team sorted out and then we can look about building the remainder of the team around that.

"He has a lot of experience behind him in both the Championship and League One so he'll be a great asset for us - and he is at a great age."

Wilcox added: "I think there is a lot more to come from Mirfin. He is happy with the deal."

A former centre-half during his playing days Wilcox knows the importance of securing a player of Mirfin's calibre so early on.

"As a centre-half myself I know how important that position is to a team," he continued.

"You have to get that position right and Mirfin has played a big part for us there in the last season.

"The club is on the up and there is a lot of investment there from the chairman which is fantastic to see."

He added: "Hopefully the resigning of Mirfin will send out a signal to all the other players that we have offered contracts to.

"There are deals there for them at the moment but they won't be there forever."
