CHELTENHAM v IRON - WE'VE MET BEFORE

25 March 2014

The Iron will be hoping for a repeat of their early season result against Cheltenham when the two sides meet on Tuesday night.

Etienne Esajas and Sam Winnall were the scorers in a 2-0 home success over the Robins back in October.

Scunthorpe are unbeaten in their last nine league meetings against Cheltenham, winning seven and drawing two.

Promotion-chasing encounter…

It was a season of contrast for the two sides, the last time Scunthorpe and Cheltenham met prior to this season - back in 2008/09.

A 3-0 victory at Glanford Park in April of 2009 was a win which put them in control of the last play-off spot, before the final game of the season against fellow play-off challengers, Tranmere.

The Iron secured that play-off spot and subsequently got promoted to the Championship.

The Robins, on the other hand, were already relegated and the 3-0 defeat just added to their woes. Goals from Paul Hayes, current Iron loanee Cliff Byrne and Henri Lansbury secured the vital 3-0 win.

A season of success…
2008/2009 isn't the only time Scunthorpe did the double over Cheltenham and later secured promotion.

They had the same success in 2004/2005, where United claimed automatic promotion to the Football League One. A 4-1 victory against the Robins in a match which got them well on the way to finalising that promotion.

A Matt Sparrow double and late goals from Richard Kell and Cliff Byrne got them the three points.

A salvaged point…
A 3-3 draw away at Cheltenham in the Third Division back in the 01/02 season seemed a good point despite going 2-0 up.

Martin Carruthers and Peter Beagrie put the Iron two up after 33 minutes. However, three goals from the Robins in 25 minutes turned the game on its head. It looked like Cheltenham were going to claim the three points, but Iron player Brian Quailey came up with a last minute equaliser to salvage the point.

That season, Scunthorpe only just missed out on play-offs by goal difference, whereas Cheltenham comfortable finished inside the playoffs and went on to be promoted to Division Two.

Other memorable scores…
18/10/2008 – Cheltenham Town 1-2 Scunthorpe United
30/09/2003 - Scunthorpe United 5-2 Cheltenham Town
