A STATEMENT FROM ALAN WELSH

10 March 2014

On Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Scunthorpe v Northampton game, some supporters of the Cobblers requested that the stewards ask some of their own supporters to sit so they could watch the game.

In the first half, those requested, after several requests, sat down - but in the second half, when requested again, the supporters wouldn't sit down and two males became abusive and were asked to leave, one walked out with the steward and left the ground, a second refused and because of his aggressiveness I told my staff to move back for things to settle.

A lady who said she was the chair of the supporters club, then said she would ask the male to leave.

Prior to this, as the second steward came down, he was attacked by a male at the front of the seats. Three other stewards assisted and the male was ejected and arrested by the police.

The steward received minor injuries and bruising. The second male did leave. At this time another group at the back of the stand started jumping up and down and then we became aware that they had broken a seat and it was thrown down the stand into their own supporters but did not hit anyone.

Seven seats were damaged overall. At no time did any person make a complaint of assault against the stewards.
