YOUTHS WIN LEAGUE OPENER

11 August 2012

The Iron's youth team started their new league season with a 1-0 home victory over Grimsby Town on Saturday.

The winning goal came in the 33rd minute as new signing Hakeem Adelakun scored on his debut.

The first year trainee striker, who signed this week, netted after latching on to Jamie Wootton's flick on from Lewis Akeister's throughball, slotting past the goalkeeper with his left foot after being played through one-on-one.

"I was really pleased with how we played in the first half," said youth development officer Tony Daws.

"We got on the ball and passed it pretty well, having lots of possession.

"I thought we played some good football at times.

"We did okay in the second half, but because of the heat we made a few substitions as some of the lads were getting a bit tired.

"Grimsby came back into the game to be fair to them.

"We ended up with two U16 players on the pitch as well but saw the game out and ended up winning 1-0.

"We had a good pre-season which we were really pleased with.

"The lads seem to have gelled together well. We've worked really hard in training and are taking on board how the football club under Alan Knill wants to play.

"We've done reasonably well to be fair.

"It's been a good pre-season and it was good to play a competitive match.

"For a first game it's gone well. We've played better and can perform better, but we're more than happy with how it went on the day."

Talking about new arrival Adelakun, Daws added: "He's a first year who has signed for us this week and has settled in well.

"Technically he is good and really quick, and he played really well."
