Following the Bank Holiday weekend, work has continued at pace on the extensive redevelopment of the playing surface at Scunthorpe United, with the installation of a brand-new Hybrid carpet system marking another major milestone in the club’s commitment to delivering a vastly improved pitch ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
The latest phase of renovations has seen specialist contractors lay the cutting-edge Hybrid Carpet Pitch system across the surface at the Attis Arena, as preparations continue throughout the summer months to create a pitch capable of withstanding the demands of a full National League season.
Hybrid Carpet Pitches combine the benefits of both natural grass and synthetic reinforcement technology. The system consists of synthetic turf fibres woven into a specialist backing material, which is then laid directly onto a prepared pitch base. Once installed, the surface is infilled with a carefully selected rootzone mix before being seeded with natural grass.
Within days, the grass begins to germinate and grow through the backing material and between the synthetic fibres, creating a durable, reinforced natural playing surface designed to offer significantly improved stability, drainage and year-round performance.
The move follows a couple of challenging seasons in which the playing surface has come under scrutiny due to adverse weather conditions and heavy usage, impacting consistency throughout the campaign. As a club, we have been determined to address those issues head-on, with the ongoing works representing one of the most substantial pitch investments undertaken in recent years.
Hybrid technology has become increasingly common throughout the professional game in recent seasons, with the vast majority of clubs across the Premier League and Championship now operating on hybrid reinforced surfaces due to their durability and improved performance qualities.
Supporters passing the stadium over the Bank Holiday weekend will already have noticed the dramatic transformation taking place, with the groundwork now entering one of its most important stages ahead of the new season.
The installation of the Hybrid system is expected to provide a number of long-term benefits, including enhanced drainage during periods of heavy rainfall, improved resistance to wear in high-traffic areas and a more consistent playing surface throughout the season.
As a club, we remain confident the extensive programme of works will ensure players, coaching staff and supporters alike benefit from a surface befitting the ambitions of the football club as preparations continue for the 2026-27 season.
