Wilson reflects after scoring at Chesterfield

3 January 2023

Attacker Cameron Wilson was disappointed with the result at Chesterfield on New Year's Day as he felt the effort put in by the Iron deserved something more.

"I thought the performance was very good again," he began.

“I think we just need to be more clinical and out of possession we just need to try and stay more compact.

"It just seemed like they took their chances better than what we did."

Wilson was happy with his performance and getting on the scoresheet for the first time this season (his second senior goal in Iron colours), saying: “I just saw (Alfie) Beestin hit it and the keeper save it. I was stood on the penalty spot, and it dropped nicely for me and then I just put it in the bottom corner. It’s always nice to get a goal.

“I thought I did pretty well. I think I could’ve had another two or three, obviously one coming off the post and the one in the second half where the keeper’s predicted where I was going to go, but I thought I did okay on the day.

“I was told to play with a bit of freedom but out of possession to make sure I'm marking (Jeff) King and I thought I did that pretty well. A few times he got in, but I did the best I could.

“I could sense an equaliser around the 70th minute. They were panicking and the fans were getting onto them, but it just wouldn’t come and then obviously it was a well-taken free kick they scored from."

Relating to the team’s performance and the feeling in the changing room, Wilson revealed: “The result doesn’t do the performance any justice. I thought we played very well.

“The frustration in the changing room is that we’re putting in a lot of effort on the pitch and the performances aren’t matching it but hopefully the results will match the performances soon."

Finally, Wilson looked ahead to the Iron’s next games, starting at home to Maidenhead United on Saturday, and maintaining his run in the sides.

He said: “We’ve done very well against the so-called better sides in the league, so now if we perform like that against the lower league sides, we might end up taking our chances and winning them.

“Hopefully I'll be starting the next game, doing the best I can and hopefully grab another goal or get an assist."
