The Iron were defeated 2-0 away from home at Boreham Wood in the Vanarama National League on Saturday afternoon.

There was little to separate the two sides at the LV Bet Stadium until a quickfire double from the home side ensured victory for Luke Garrard’s men.

It was an even game for both sides in the opening exchanges until the Iron’s Jake Leake looked to break ground early in the first real transition of play.

Leake’s eighth minute interception down the left-hand side of the pitch saw the defender drive the length of the pitch into the opposition’s area, but just running out of grass as the cross loomed.

Boreham Wood then hit back with the first corner of the game just a few minutes later. The first cross was dealt with by the Iron but the second ball into the area was met by a Wood player who helped it wide for a goal kick.

Captain Andrew Boyce denied Boreham Wood a clear-cut chance in the 18th minute when space opened up for striker Lee Ndlovu to be played through, which was done by the midfielder, but the heavy touch allowed Boyce to hook clear for United.

Space opened up again for Boreham Wood just two minutes later when a quick break saw Zak Brunt take one touch before unleashing a strike wide of the mark.

Ndlovu and Brunt then linked up again in the 24th minute with a one-two down the right side of the pitch resulting in the striker charging towards goal and blasting over Chapman’s net.

The Iron won their first corner of the game in the 28th minute when Leake’s throw-in was turned away by the Boreham Wood defence, but the resulting corner was dealt with in the end.

Ndlovu was again at the forefront of Boreham Wood’s attack in the 38th minute, losing his footing in the area before a strong save by Chapman was cleared by Harvey Bunker.

From the clearance, the Iron broke through Jacob Butterfield who carried the ball before a link-up with Tom Pugh resulted in Butterfield testing himself on his weaker foot from distance with the shot going wide.

Alfie Beestin got United’s first shot on target moments before the half time whistle, connecting with Butterfield’s deep cross from the right, but ‘keeper Nathan Ashmore caught with ease resulting in Wayne Cartmel’s whistle blowing.

Boreham Wood opened up the Scunthorpe defence just minutes into the second half when Tyrone Marsh’s ball was played through to Erico Sousa, trying to catch out Chapman, but the Iron tidied up to concede just a corner.

In the 53rd minute, Brunt slipped through Sousa who struck a firm shot on target upon running into the area. The resultant throw-in was dealt with well by Boyce and Bunker respectively.

Just seconds later it was then United’s turn to flood forward through Cam Wilson, who earnt a corner.

Butterfield’s delivery was cleared, with Pugh then doing well to shield the ball to Bunker. His cross into the box turned towards goal, looping over the bar and dropping on top of the net.

Boreham Wood took the lead in the 64th minute through Marsh after the winger snuck through on the right to drill in at the near post.

The Wood doubled their lead just under two minutes later when a mix-up at the back allowed Ndlovu to roll the ball in.

Chapman thwarted Marsh in the 69th minute, who was looking for his second of the game, when the attacker got in again down the right, with United’s ‘keeper pushing away for a corner which was dealt with.

United looked to push back into the game in the 79th minute after work down the left side of the pitch.

Beestin picked up the ball in the middle before working wide with Leake overlapping, who then received the ball to play towards Gerry McDonagh in the area, but a connection couldn’t be made with the chance.

The Iron continued to work an opening in the 85th minute when Pugh drove down the right, producing a cutback for substitute Will Smith, who struck a shot with power. The attempt looked to have struck the arm of a Boreham Wood defender, but the referee was unmoved despite protest.

Jimmy Dean’s men return to action on Tuesday, 28th February away to Maidstone United in the Vanarama National League.
