McDonagh: There's still more to come from me

7 February 2023

New signing Gerry McDonagh was glad to have got on the scoresheet and delighted with the turnout of the fans, but ultimately disappointed with the result against Barnet on Friday.

“It was quite a harsh result, he started. “We conceded soft goals but in general I thought we did well at times. I’m happy that I scored but that’s not the main thing, I'd rather have won but not scored.

“It is important to get goals, as a striker it’s my job, but the main thing is to get a good result and it didn’t happen on Friday, but we’ll go again.

“I'll be honest, they (Barnet) were no better than us. I suppose they have done us in the 90 minutes, but that’s football."

The 6ft 5in forward was pleased with getting the nod in the starting line-up despite not having much game time so far this season, after signing following his departure from Scottish side Cove Rangers.

“I’m really delighted that I've come in and started. Hopefully I did myself justice and will get picked again," he said.

“It’s football, you just get through the 90 minutes, I got through it well and I feel fine. Now it’s back to the training ground this week and getting the basics right again. Having the extra week of preparation (until the next game at home to Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday, February 18th) is perfect to get all the ideas right and put them into practice."

When asked about the turnout of over 5,000 home fans and their impact on the game, McDonagh replied: “It was really good, especially when I scored and the fans started bouncing, it was just a harsh result to take."

Finally, McDonagh spoke about his experiences since joining the club and what to expect from him.

“The lads are really good, I’m settling in well, there’s good facilities here and it’s all really good," he explained.

“I want more goals. I haven't come here for one goal; I want more goals. Friday wasn’t my best, nowhere near it, and there’s still more to come for me."
